By far, I think the most important is educating yourself concurrently on bird behavior and habitats while learning the photography side of things. Really, this applies to almost any genre, but it is particularly important in one in which you are photographing live creatures you have no control over, as your ability to understand, read, and anticipate their behavior could be the difference between being ready for that show-stopping shot when it appears for a fleeting moment or kicking yourself because something happened too quickly for you to react to and capture it.
