‘Determined to learn more and more’: Brentwood Photography Group members trade knowledge for 20+ years – Tennessean

“I still learn something new about photography just about every day,” Dick Dougall, 90, recently told the Tennessean.

And for more than 20 years, Dougall has shared that knowledge with members of the community photography group he founded.

He started Brentwood Photography Group in 1998 and added Lunch Bunch shortly after in 1999.

According to a news release about both photography groups, “BPG has grown to become a leading resource for photographers in the Nashville-Brentwood-Franklin community. Today it includes nearly 200 members at all skill levels — beginning, amateur and professional photographers, with skills ranging from novice to expert.”

The Lunch Bunch group supports the growth of their photographic skills through education and exhibitions of photographic accomplishments.

Through December, the work of 13 Lunch Bunch members will be on display in an exhibit called “We’re Still Learning” at the Williamson County Public Library before it moves to Square Market & Cafe in Columbia, Tennessee, for the month of January.

“This exhibit is an excellent opportunity for the people of Williamson County to enjoy some excellent works of photographic art and learn about the great educational opportunities afforded by the study of photography,” Dougall said.

The group is built on creating friendships with others who share a love of photography. Lunch Bunch members meet once a month to listen to guest speakers, participate in group outings and strengthen their skills.

During monthly meetings, the group discusses photographic topics ranging from camera development to image-editing software. Group members come excited to educate themselves and teach other photographers what they have learned about producing pictures.

“We get together and probably have about 15 regulars. May sometimes have as many as 20 people show up for the lunch meeting to watch a video or something about trying to learn more about photography,” Vice President John Mott said.

Dougall’s love for capturing and processing photographs begin when he was only twelve years old. Mott noted Dougall’s determination to enhance his knowledge: “He is determined to learn more and more about it.”
